Scientific racism is the misuse of scientific methods, data, and theories to justify racial hierarchies, discrimination, and the belief in the inherent superiority or inferiority of certain racial groups. It uses pseudoscientific methods to create false, biologically based distinctions between humans.

It is important to emphasize that scientific racism is not considered genuine science by modern standards. It has been fundamentally debunked by contemporary genetics, which demonstrates that human genetic variation is actually greater within populations than between them, and that "race" is a sociopolitical phenomenon rather than a biological one.

Ideas related to scientific racism persisted because it's a highly functional tool for maintaining power. It was a structural justification for colonialism, slavery, and socioeconomic exclusion.

Key Figures and Ideas in Scientific Racism
1. François Bernier (1620–1688): First to attempt to classify the entirety of humanity into "species" or "races" based on physical traits (particularly women). This is often considered a starting point for modern racial thought and established white Europeans as the "norm" from which others deviated.

2. Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778): Divided humans into five varieties. His classification assigned behavioral and mental traits to physical types and this became a blueprint for racist hierarchies.

3. Charles White (1728–1813): He used the "Great Chain of Being" to attempt to prove that whites and Black people were separate species. He was a supporter of polygenism: the belief that different races have separate origins.

4. Samuel George Morton (1799–1851): American physician who used craniometry (skull measurements) to argue that brain size correlated with intelligence, Claimed Caucasians had the largest brains and Black people the smallest. His data was famously critiqued for its inaccuracies and bias.

5. Arthur de Gobineau (1816–1882): Proposed a rigid three-race model (white, black, yellow) and warned that "race mixing" would lead to the collapse of civilization. His work was pivotal in the development of "Aryan" supremacy theories.

6. Francis Galton (1822–1911): Coined the term "eugenics" in 1883. He sought to "improve" human populations through selective breeding and was a foundational figure in statistics and psychometrics. Cousin of Charles Darwin.

7. Madison Grant (1865–1937): Promoted the concept of the "Nordic race" as the pinnacle of humanity. His work was highly influential in the US and in Nazi Germany.
My Wiki is part of an overall personal knowledge & creative flow that I have been following since late 2024. It holds the factual and learned details from authors, experts, and others with more experience than I have. The Arboretum holds the facts, information, quotes, studies, and research notes from my readings and questions that spring from places I visit and people I meet.

I do semi-casual research via the internet, free resources (governments, libraries, archives), and stuff I find in the library database system at the university where I work. It's unstructured and not focused towards a dissertation, book, or other accredited deliverable. I just like learning and this is a good reason to learn how to keep a wiki. (Although this knowledge is not all so, keeping a wiki is a professionally relevant skill.)

An arboretum is a center dedicated to the cultivation, study, and display of a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and other woody plants. This wiki grew out of the digital garden in March 2026.
* Reference list of documentation best practices that I can use and share, including locations where I learned about each topic ("Max's Writing Manual")
* Create profile pages with quotes and questions from books I've read
* Portfolio full of freely available information (my notes & ideas) so I don't have to remove any proprietary information to use it as a writing artifact
*

To clear the air: I've typed out everything in this Wiki. Part of the purpose is to have a place where I can use writing to help synthesize and connect ideas in a more formal arena than the digital garden.

Max: Updated to provide more context about this

In technical writing, front-loading refers to leading with the most important information. This ensures that users can find what they need quickly and understand context before they act. Leading with the most important information improves comprehension and helps the reader decide if they should keep reading.

Core models for documentation:
* Inverted Pyramid: This model requires information is presented in descending order of importance with the most critical concepts, statements, and keywords at the top of a topic or paragraph. In journalism, this would include the 5 Ws immediately: who, what, when, where, and why, followed by supporting details, then the wrap-up.
* Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): This model focuses on placing the conclusion or required action at the top of a communication.
* Context before action: At the sentence level, this model dictates conditions/contexts must be stated before the instruction.

Technical communication research shows...
Research into cognitive psychology and technical communication provides reasons why this ordering is critical:1
* Scanning: Most users do not read documentation cover-to-cover; instead, they scan for relevant actions and keywords, and only stop to read carefully once they find something that matches their goal. Scannable text increases usability by 47%.
* Act-first instinct: People tend to act as soon as they see words describing an action. If the context/caution is placed at the end, users often perform the action before they reach that information.
* Sense-making: When interacting with a new system, users both need to act to understand the program, but also need to understand the program before they can act. Because of this, they'll choose the "first reasonable action" rather than reading all of the instructions first.
* Cognitive load and memory: Working memory is limited in how much information it can process simultaneously. Seeing high-level context first helps users build a mental model (schema) that reduces the mental effort required to process subsequent instruction.

In technical writing, "context before action" or "action before result" are fundamental principles for structuring instructions to match how the human brain processes information. Ordering concepts appropriately in instructions ensures the reader does not take premature/incorrect actions before they fully understand the conditions or consequences. It is not appropriate to assume that all users are fully reading the instructions before taking action.

* Context before action refers to placing conditions, locations, or requirements before the instruction.
* Action before result ensures information is presented in the order the user will experience it.

When a reader starts an action before they realize they're in the wrong place or don't have the right tools, this is called "instructional blindness." In UX writing this is referred to as "front-loading."

Examples
Details should be mapped based on how the user will perform them. Include prerequisites first, and make no assumptions.
Technical communication research shows...
Research into technical communication provides reasons why this ordering is critical:1
* Constructing mental models: A 1987 study found that when context is provided first, readers followed directions more successfully.
* Cognitive load and memory: Working memory is limited in how much information it can process simultaneously. Placing the context before the action minimizes cognitive load and allows the reader to immediately orient themselves before their memory is taxed with the procedure steps.
It is a method to organize your tasks, commitments, projects, ideas, issues, and information, instead of keeping it in your head, and put it into a reliable system outside your mind so that you can focus on doing things, instead of remembering them.

The point is not to "do more" or "be more productive," but to reduce cognitive load to help with prioritization.

5 steps
# Capture - brain dump of everything on your mind
# Clarify - turn vague stuff into concrete stuff and action items
# Organize - may happen simultaneously with Clarify - systematically categorize info/tasks into actionable, pending, projects, backlog, calendar, reference, and someday/maybe
# Reflect - regularly review to help with planning
# Engage - take action - do the work

Using GTD for Learning
A knowledge worker who must constantly process complex technical information can use the GTD method as a structured way to handle their own learning and output. Tackle new topics by applying the 5 steps:

# Capture: Collect every idea, resource, or link related to the topic that grabs your attention.
# Clarify: Define whether the captured information is actionable. Multi-step goals can become projects. Define the "Next Action" to move the learning forward.
# Organize: Sort items into clean buckets:
#* Actionable items: Group by context or the environment in which you would do the item (on a train, in bed, at the office, etc.).
#* Non-actionable items: Move to a reference system to keep track of these somewhere where they won't clutter your action list.
# Reflect: Conduct a weekly or monthly review to update your lists, acknowledge completed learning milestones, and ensure new captured items are clarified and sorted.
# Engage: Make choices about what to study/do in any given moment based on your context, time, and energy levels. Remember, the system only works if you engage!

Welcome to the Arboretum, a dedicated space for the raw materials of my research and learning. While my digital garden represents my personal synthesis and evolved thoughts, this Wiki serves as the foundational layer with the context that informs my thinking.

It functions as a structured repository for the subjects I am actively deconstructing. I want to learn the history of automated technologies and share what I know about the nuances of usable documentation. I want to explore the evolution of zines from physical to digital and map the intricate "how-to" of using a window bird feeder to enrich your indoor cat's life.

By documenting what I am learning here, I create a trail of information that eventually feeds into the creative ideas found in the garden.
<blockquote>Your purpose in writing at work is to communicate to other people [...] it's not about you; it's about them.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Even if your audience does have substantial background knowledge, it can still be useful to provide some brief context before you plunge into your core content. While you have been thinking about this topic, your readers have likely been focusing on other matters and could use help getting their heads into the issue. That said, your purpose should not be to convey everything you note, but rather to identify and share the information your audience needs. (note: my emphasis)</blockquote>

<blockquote>If your audience is seeking information to solve a problem or answer a question, make sure to address their needs directly. Good writing anticipates and answers the reader's questions.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Always construct your headings in a parallel manor. You can use full sentences, fragments that start with a verb, or fragments that start with a noun. Just don't mix and match.</blockquote>
<blockquote>The real value comes from what you do before and after you actually write, and from the knowledge and experience you bring to the project.</blockquote>

<blockquote>Any obstacle between the reader and the information they need is going to make their day worse.</blockquote>
